How to Make a Sigil with a Magic Square

A sigil turns a wish into a symbol. In this guide you'll learn the classic planetary magic-square method: pick a planet, convert a name or intention into numbers with Pythagorean numerology, then trace those numbers across the planet's square to draw your own personal sigil. Prefer to skip the math? Our free Sigil Generator does every step for you.

What is a sigil?

A sigil (from the Latin sigillum, “seal”) is a symbol you create to represent a single, specific intention — protection, love, focus, courage, and so on. The act of designing and contemplating the symbol is meant to plant that intention in your mind. Sigils appear across centuries of Western esoteric tradition and were popularised for modern use by chaos magick.

What is a magic square (Kamea)?

A magic square, or Kamea, is a grid of numbers in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to the same total — its “magic constant”. In Renaissance occult works such as Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy, each of the seven classical planets is assigned its own square. The sigil is drawn as a single line that hops from number to number across this grid.

Step 1 — Choose your planet

Each planet rules a different kind of intention, and each has a square of a different size. Match the planet to your goal:

PlanetSquareMagic sumBest for
Saturn 3×3 15 Discipline, structure & protection. Use Saturn for boundaries, banishing, binding, perseverance, breaking bad habits, releasing limitations, time and long-term goals.
Jupiter 4×4 34 Abundance, growth & luck. Use Jupiter for prosperity, success, expansion, opportunity, generosity, optimism and wisdom.
Mars 5×5 65 Courage, strength & drive. Use Mars for energy, willpower, victory, protection, passion, assertiveness and overcoming obstacles.
Sun 6×6 111 Success, vitality & confidence. Use the Sun for fame, leadership, health, joy, recognition, creativity and personal power.
Venus 7×7 175 Love, beauty & harmony. Use Venus for attraction, friendship, romance, art, pleasure, self-worth and reconciliation.
Mercury 8×8 260 Mind, communication & skill. Use Mercury for intellect, learning, travel, commerce, eloquence, memory and quick thinking.
Moon 9×9 369 Intuition, dreams & emotion. Use the Moon for psychic work, cycles, fertility, peace, the subconscious, nurturing and inner guidance.

Smaller squares (like Saturn's 3×3) give simple, bold sigils and are the easiest place to start. Larger squares (like the Moon's 9×9) spread the numbers further apart, producing more intricate shapes.

Step 2 — Write your intention

Decide what you want and phrase it as a short, positive, present-tense statement — for example, “I am calm and confident,” or simply use a name. Two common styles:

  • Name / phrase method: use the words as they are. This is the simplest approach and what the generator uses by default.
  • Chaos-magick condensing: remove spaces, then strike out repeated letters (and sometimes the vowels) so only unique letters remain. This shortens the path and makes the symbol less literal.

Step 3 — Convert letters to numbers

Reduce each letter to a single digit with Pythagorean numerology. The alphabet simply cycles 1–9:

123456789
A J SB K TC L UD M VE N WF O XG P YH Q ZI R

So A=1, B=2 … I=9, then it repeats: J=1, K=2 … R=9, S=1 … Z=8. Write out the digits for every letter of your name or intention, keeping their order.

Step 4 — Plot the numbers on the square

Take your chosen planet's Kamea and find the cell that holds each number, one digit at a time. Put a small dot in each cell as you go. (Because Pythagorean digits are always 1–9, and every planetary square contains the numbers 1–9, you can always find every digit.)

Step 5 — Connect the path

Draw one continuous line from the first number to the last, in order:

  • Mark the start with a small open circle.
  • Mark the end with a short bar across the line.
  • If the same number appears twice in a row (a doubled letter), draw a tiny loop at that cell instead of a zero-length line.

In our generator, the line is drawn as a gradient that flows from green at the start to red at the end, so you can always read the direction of your sigil.

Worked example: “HOPE” on the Saturn square

492357816

Saturn's 3×3 square (rows, columns and diagonals all sum to 15). We convert each letter of HOPE:

H = 8 O = 6 P = 7 E = 5

Then connect the cells 8 → 6 → 7 → 5 in order, marking the green start and red end.

green → red

Step 6 — Stylize, charge & release

Once the raw line is drawn you can redraw it more beautifully — add flourishes, symmetry, or a circle around it — until it feels like yours. Traditionally the final steps are to charge the sigil (concentrate on it intensely while holding your intention) and then release it (let it fade from conscious thought). Keep it in a journal, set it as wallpaper, or use it as a focus for meditation.

Some practitioners work on the planet's day for an extra link to its energy — Saturday for Saturn, Thursday for Jupiter, Tuesday for Mars, Sunday for the Sun, Friday for Venus, Wednesday for Mercury and Monday for the Moon.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a sigil from my own name?

Yes. Type your name, convert each letter to its Pythagorean digit, and trace the digits on your chosen square. Names with repeated letters create loops, which add character to the symbol.

What's the difference between the magic-square method and the “letter” method?

The letter method (Austin Osman Spare's style) builds a glyph by combining the shapes of the leftover letters. The magic-square method instead plots numbers on a planetary grid and connects them. This guide and our generator use the magic-square method.

Which planet is best for love, money, or protection?

Venus for love and attraction, Jupiter for money and abundance, and Saturn for protection and boundaries. See the planet table above for the full list.

Do I need to be able to draw?

No. The shapes are just straight lines between grid cells. If you'd rather not draw by hand, the Sigil Generator renders and exports it for you.

Do sigils actually work?

Sigils are a symbolic, creative practice with no proven supernatural effect. Many people value them as a way to focus and remember an intention. Treat them as inspiration — not as a replacement for real-world action or professional advice.
